Often the elderly have compromised immune systems. The one condition of our visits is we do not attend when we are sick. Parents have been incredibly understanding about this request and arrange to keep sick children home. When there is uncertainty whether they are contagious, we always err on the side of caution. If adults are contagious they do not come with us; on rare occasions adults (me) come but wear a mask.

I only had to cancel one time when many of the children had coughs but were in attendance at school. Reports of measles or chicken pox would be another reason to cancel. Some sites require attendees to have flu shots.
